Details:
Outer Passage is going Trans-Atlantic again!
This is an ocean crossing in all it’s glory, the most authentic offshore adventure in which you will be over a thousand miles from land. We might see whales migrating, sea birds, flying fish and the occasional cargo ship, but mostly, it will be just you, the crew and the incredible expanse of open ocean. As we sail East, we will experience warm to cooler days, calms, rough seas and starry nights to remember for a lifetime.
-
This passage is a fully immersive, hands-on experience. You won’t just be along for the ride, you’ll be part of the crew. Each day brings new opportunities to learn and build confidence, with hands-on training in sail handling, watch-keeping, weather routing, navigation and life at sea.
Training is tailored to your experience level and interests, with opportunities to focus on key skills such as:
Offshore weather forecasting and routing
Watchkeeping and night sailing
Sail trim, reefing, and heavy-weather handling
Radar, AIS, and navigation techniques
Safety protocols and emergency preparedness
Communication systems and offshore readiness
Whether you’re building miles, preparing for your own cruising adventures, or simply curious about what it takes to cross an ocean, this is real-world training in a true bluewater setting.
-
Upon arrival, you’ll have time to settle in, unpack, and get comfortable before joining a full tour of the beautiful Balance 526. Depending on the weather outlook, we may spend a day or two preparing, covering systems orientation, sail/line handling, winch ettiquette and safety protocols while getting familiar with life aboard.
When the departure window opens, we’ll set our course eastward and begin the ocean passage toward the Azores!
-
Leaving from Bermuda means conditions are shaped by the Bermuda–Azores High and passing frontal systems, so winds are variable. We aim to depart on a favorable window, then ride the edge of the high where westerlies and southwesterlies are common. Expect a mix of light-air spells near the high, fresher breeze with fronts, occasional squalls, and changing sea states. Temperatures typically trend cooler. As always, we adapt routing and sail plan to the conditions to keep the boat fast, safe, and comfortable.
