Details:
Join us for a five-day Caribbean sailing adventure from Antigua to the British Virgin Islands. This passage is designed as an approachable introduction to offshore sailing, combining relaxed island cruising with a short, off the wind overnight sail through classic trade-wind conditions. It’s an ideal step for sailors curious about passage making who want real experience without committing to multiple nights offshore.
-
We’ll begin in Antigua with a couple of days dedicated to settling aboard, sailing locally, and getting comfortable with the boat - raising sails, taking the helm, practicing maneuvers, and learning how we set up for longer passages. During this time, we’ll also work through passage planning together: weather, routing, sail selection, watch schedules, and what to expect overnight.
Then we’ll set sail north for the overnight passage to the BVIs—a predominantly off the wind run in steady trade winds. You’ll experience night sailing, standing watch, and offshore life. We’ll arrive in the BVIs ready to slow things down, anchor down, and celebrate landfall.
-
This passage offers a supportive introduction to offshore sailing, with training tailored to your comfort level. Topics may include:
- Passage planning & weather routing
- Sail selection & downwind trim
- Watchkeeping & night sailing fundamentals
- Offshore safety procedures
- Navigation, AIS, and communication systems
- Anchoring and arrival planning after an offshore leg
You’ll be involved as much as you’d like, learning by doing in real conditions, without pressure.
-
Exact routing depends on weather.
Falmouth Harbour, Antigua – Our departure point and a chance to settle aboard, shake out the sails, and get comfortable with the boat and systems
Barbuda – A stop at one of the Caribbean’s most pristine islands, known for pink-sand beaches, shallow turquoise waters, and a true sense of remoteness
Open-Water Passage – A downwind overnight sail in classic trade-wind conditions, with watch rotations and night sailing
Tortola, BVI – A rewarding landfall in the heart of the British Virgin Islands, followed by calm anchorages and relaxed cruising to close out the trip
-
April offers some of the Caribbean’s best sailing. Expect steady easterly trade winds of 15–20 knots, warm days around 82–85°F (28–29°C), and comfortable nights. Seas are typically well-organized for downwind sailing, making this an excellent time for a first overnight passage.
-
Start: Antigua (VC Bird International Airport – ANU)
Finish: Tortola, British Virgin Islands (EIS or via ferry to STT)
