Boston to Lunenberg (9 Days)

Offshore Cruising Experience - 500NM /9 Days

Details:

Join Darren and Amanda aboard Loki for a remarkable 9-day adventure from Boston to Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most celebrated ports for arriving sailors. This trip blends New England coastal cruising with a meaningful offshore passage across the Gulf of Maine, an ideal mix for anyone seeking hands-on training, real-world passage-making experience, and the joy of making landfall in a storied maritime town.

  • We begin right in the heart of Boston Harbor, surrounded by history, skyline views, and the energy of the North Atlantic at our doorstep. After settling aboard Loki, we’ll spend the first couple of days coastal cruising —exploring classic harbors like Salem, Marblehead, or Gloucester while practicing the fundamentals of navigation, sail trim, and anchoring.

Once the weather window is right, we’ll set out for a 2–3 day offshore passage, sailing ~400 nm across the Gulf of Maine. This stretch offers an excellent opportunity to learn offshore routines: watchstanding, night sailing, weather interpretation, and the rhythm of life underway. As we approach Nova Scotia, conditions typically shift to cooler breezes, crisp horizons, and some of the most rewarding landfall sailing on the East Coast.

Our journey ends in Lunenburg, a picturesque waterfront town with colorful buildings, wooden schooners, and maritime heritage woven into every street. Depending on our timing, we’ll spend our final days day-sailing or exploring the coast around Lunenburg, enjoying leisurely sails, seafood dinners, and the satisfaction of a passage well made.

  • This trip offers a comprehensive blend of coastal and offshore skills. Training can include:

    • Coastal navigation, harbor approaches & piloting

    • Route planning & interpreting weather windows

    • Sail trim & helming in varied conditions

    • Watchkeeping (day & night)

    • Position plotting & logkeeping

    • Offshore routines, safety checks & communication systems

    • Real-life mile-building experience

You’ll be involved as much or as little as you like, learning from Darren and Amanda in a supportive, confidence-building environment.

  • We choose our itinerary based on the weather, but expect daily sailing activities and excursions from one picturesque anchorage to another. Some highlights include:

    • Boston Harbor – A vibrant, historic departure port

    • Salem – Maritime history and a welcoming harbor

    • Gloucester – America’s oldest seaport and a classic North Shore anchorage

    • Offshore Passage (400 nm) – Watchkeeping, night sailing, and passagemaking routines

    • Approach to Nova Scotia – Lighthouse-dotted coastline and crisp North Atlantic scenery

    • Lunenburg – A UNESCO World Heritage port known for its colorful waterfront, maritime culture, and warm welcome to sailors

  • Expect warm days departing Boston (70–82°F / 21–28°C) with a cool sea breeze offshore. The Gulf of Maine can bring a mix of light winds, SW or W breezes, occasional fog, and crisp conditions near Nova Scotia. Water and air temperatures typically cool as we head north, offering a great range of real-world sailing environments.

    • Start: Boston, Massachusetts

    • Finish: Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

    • Fly into Boston Logan (BOS) and out of Halifax Stanfield (YHZ), approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Lunenburg.

    • We recommend arriving the day before departure and arranging flexible travel where possible. Final boarding details will be provided prior to the trip.

  • Our prices are all-inclusive once aboard, covering meals, snacks, refreshments, evening sundowners, and mooring or docking fees. Not included: Transportation to/from the program and meals/drinks ashore.
