Maine Cruising Week (5 Days)

Coastal Cruising Experience - 100NM /5 Days

Details:

Learn to sail a Balance 502 while exploring Maine’s idyllic Casco Bay. We’ll teach you the ropes on everything you need to know about cruising – from tidal anchoring and weather planning, to daggerboard management, A-frame main sheet systems, and the many areas that make performance catamarans stand out.

  • This is a hands-on passage designed to build your sailing skills and deepen your seamanship. Each trip is tailored to your experience level and learning goals.

    • Core Sailing Topics:

    • Sail trim and helm control

    • Coastal navigation and trip planning

    • Passage planning and weather routing

    • Anchoring techniques and mooring practices

    • Onboard systems and life at anchor routines

We keep things flexible and personal. You tell us what you want to focus on, and we tailor the days around you. And by the end of the trip, you'll feel more confident at the helm and better prepared for future cruising, or even your own boat ownership.

    • Portland Old Port - Lovely historic old port with a lively night life and great food

    • Jewell Island - Quiet night on anchor at one of the prettiest islands in Casco Bay. A story-book hiking trail, lined with lobster pots, and some of the best sunsets.

    • Eagle Island and Harpswell - We take a day stop for lunch on the Island and home that once belonged to famed Arctic Explorer, Admiral Peary. This historic island has walking trails covered by luscious gardens started by his wife, Josephine Peary. We will sail to Dolphin Marina for the night, and wake up to free muffins and coffee, hand delivered to us at our mooring.

    • Peaks Island - Anchor at Casco Bay’s most inhabited island, and explore the shops and bike trails

    • Portland Harbor - Return to Portland and visit historic Fort Gorges

  • August is Maine’s most popular month for tourism due to the perfect weather. The water is about as warm as it gets, somewhere around 60 degrees, the sun is nearly always out keeping our days around 80-85 degrees. Nights will drop to 65-70. Despite this warmth during the day, you will need to dress for colder weather while we sail. Temperatures on the water, with the wind chill, will feel more like 65 degrees while we’re moving. Bring layers - sweaters, t-shirts, and a rain jacket for the occasional shower.

Prevailing West and South Westerlies will keep warm moist air circulating, creating foggy mornings, and at times, foggy days. Winds around 15 - 18 kts, make for lovely sailing. Occasional Northerlies will cool things off, and keep us on our toes!
